Farewell Chapelon is my first novel and goes back to
teenage aspirations to become an author. It took over ten years to complete the
story with much of the work being done whilst travelling. The novel was written
in airport departure lounges, on trains and ferries, in hotels and at railway
stations. The story contents includes subjects with which I am very familiar –
and yes, I know what it is like to be on a wrecked ship falling apart around
you.
The timing of the novel’s release might be coincidental but is very appropriate
for 2022. HM Coastguard was established initially as an anti-smuggling
organisation exactly 200 years ago. When I joined the service, Civil Search and
Rescue was its primary responsibility. Also at this time exactly fifty years
ago I had been working on my first ship for several months. It was the start of
a seafaring career that I had decided upon after leaving school. A slightly
unusual decision for somebody originally from the Black Country!
